Welcome

The President of the Institute of Mine Surveyors of South Africa welcomes you to this website.  The Institute of Mine Surveyors was established in 1923.

The primary objectives of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mine surveying and allied disciplines, to promote and protect the character and interests of the profession of mine surveying and to foster professional etiquette. (Code of Ethics).

The Institute of Mine Surveyors is also actively involved with the education and training of mine surveyors and is affiliated to the International Society for Mine Surveying (ISM) and the South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors (PLATO), which is our registration body.

MINING INDUSTRY SUPPORT FOR IMSSA CONTINUED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

FOR PRACTICING MINE SURVEYORS

The Constitution of the Institute of Mine Surveyors of South Africa (IMSSA) states that IMSSA, ‘as an independent learned society, will at all times be deemed to be a purely professional, technical and scientific body functioning in the interest of the Mine Surveying profession at large’. To demonstrate this nature of our activities, one of our objectives is to advance the science and practice of Mine Surveying,   Mineral Evaluation and allied disciplines. IMSSA developed a new strategic plan in 2010, which includes matters of Education; Registration of Mine Surveyors; IMSSA alliance with professional bodies; and a Continued Professional Development (CPD) structure for Mine Surveyors.

Regarding CPD and the development of a point system for activities, we see CPD as a broad concept, not just upholding registration. IMSSA’s professional affiliation with a statutory body is with the South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors (PLATO) established in terms of the Professional and Technical Surveyors’ Act, 1984 (Act No 40 of 1984). To date there has been no requirement for surveyors to maintain professional development by attending IMSSA and PLATO events, however, this is about to change, in order to align with professional best practice. To this effect, IMSSA has approached PLATO to create and implement a CPD framework for practicing surveyors.

The purpose of this letter is to request mining companies employing mine surveyors to:

· Provide support for mine surveyors to maintain IMSSA membership and apply for registration with PLATO as a minimum requirement for maintaining currency of knowledge in their professional field;

· Support IMSSA members to earn CPD points by attending professional development events and activities as an ongoing requirement to maintain currency of knowledge; and

· Incorporate professional membership and registration as part of performance assessment and career development criteria for practicing mine surveyors.

Yours sincerely

Professor FT Cawood

Immediate Past President: IMSSA
